Practical nurses play an important role in the delivery of healthcare to individuals, families and communities. They work in a variety of settings, including doctors' offices, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes. Practical nursing is also a growing field that offers significant opportunities. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for LPNs are growing much faster than the average for all occupations. An aging population, combined with a rise in chronic diseases, means that more and more people will need the care that LPNs can provide.
What does all this mean for you? It means that choosing a career in practical nursing is a great way to establish a stable career path. LPNs often may, over time, take positions offering increased responsibility and compensation. Many move into supervisory positions, and some eventually pursue additional education and become registered nurses. At FORTIS, we offer educational programs to prepare students to become either a practical nurse or a registered nurses, as well as to prepare to enter other healthcare fields. If you aren't sure which field is right for you, our admissions representatives can help.
As a FORTIS practical nursing student, you'll work closely with your classroom instructors as you learn nursing theory. You and your fellow students will be able to learn the concepts behind your clinical and lab work so that upon graduation you'll be prepared to sit for the licensing exam and your career. In addition, your foundational work in the classroom can help to prepare you for further education, such as an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing that could lead to becoming a registered nurse.
Of course, you will participate in laboratory and clinical training in our program. In the clinical portion of the program, you will supervised by nursing professionals and other healthcare workers. This allows you to see, and experience, nursing care in action. you'll also have the opportunity to work with patients of all ages and cultural groups while also caring for people with a variety of health conditions. This preparation will serve you well as you look for jobs and develop your career.
After completing your program, you'll be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN examination, the standard licensing examination in the United States for practical nurses. After passing the exam and meeting other licensing requirements, you'll be able to gain your license and begin working as a practical nurse. LPN licenses are generally recognized by nursing boards in other states, so may find that you've suddenly become a lot more mobile.
